POSSUM HANGING BASKETS

Updated: Apr 16

Hanging baskets can be used to create artificial dreys for Ringtail possums

Possum homes need to be sturdy and waterproof. An artificial drey should closely mimic the natural drey in terms of comfort and size. Hanging baskets fit these requirements perfectly. Items Required

  1. Two wire hanging baskets

  2. Two coconut fibre basket liners

  3. Zipties

How to make the drey

  1. Bottom Basket - Get your wire hanging baskets and put your coconut fiber basket liner inside

  2. Top- remove the chain and place the fibre liner inside hanging basket number two (top)

  3. align the baskets together so the wire baskets match up start to ziptie along the seams connectnig them together. Tip: if you slide the ziptie through the fibre liner it will hold the basket liner in place within the hanging basket.

  4. Within the arch design on the wire basket you will see 3 straight lines of metal, use your wire cutters to remove the middle wire

  5. Cut the liner and tucked into the metal frame

  6. Soft leaf litter or coconut fibre can be placed in the bottom of the drey for added comfort for the animal, and a few layers of paperbark tied on top of the drey gives it extra protection from inclement weather and also looks ‘natural’.

    Hanging the drey

    • Avoid isolated trees

    • choose a tree with shade and space to move

    • Avoid the direct sun during the day on the drey opening and away from the wind and rain

    • Hang the basket 3-5 meters up the tree to avoid predators

    • secure the bottom in the fork of a tree to stop it swaying or fasten with straps or wire. Premade hanging baskets can be bought directly from us - For more information please contact us
